Life-threatening hunger is caused by conflict, climate change, natural disasters, poverty and inequality – particularly gender inequality. As a result, too many people still don’t have enough food to eat in a world of plenty.

Action Against Hunger works to tackle the causes of hunger to prevent people from experiencing life-threatening hunger and malnutrition.

How your gift can help

At Action Against Hunger, we’re committed to transparency. And this starts by evaluating the impact we’ve had on communities around the world.

Thank to supporters like you, last year responded to several major humanitarian crises – from conflict-related emergencies in Ukraine and Gaza to natural disasters like cyclones in Madagascar and the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.

In 2023, we ran projects in 56 countries and reached over 21 million people.

Sonali’s story

Sonali is lovingly holding her baby girl, Daya. As Daya looks up at her, Sonali bursts with joy. After months of resilience, they’d made it. But it hasn’t been easy.

As Sonali’s pregnancy began, her iron levels were critically low. Our team prescribed her calcium and iron tablets at her first antenatal appointment. But at her follow-up, the waiting room chair stood empty.

Sonali, a woman from India, looks at the camera while holding her baby Daya.

Lying at home, Sonali couldn’t get up. When our team reached her, they sprang into action. With their support, Sonali travelled to hospital and received intravenous therapy. Three days later, she left with renewed hope.

Sonali’s resilience still stood strong as her iron levels dropped again in her third trimester. Our team watched Sonali’s health closely for the rest of her pregnancy.

And finally, Sonali is cradling her newly born Daya, who gazes up at her with bright eyes. They’d made it.

Thanks to you, Sonali delivered Daya safely. But our work never stops. Join us in giving more mothers like Daya the critical care they need.

Community projects in Senegal

With your help, together we’re unstoppable. Project Vruddhi in India, where we helped Sonali, is just a snapshot of the work we achieved in 2023. With you by our side, we’re ending life-threatening hunger. One person and one community at a time.

Let’s travel from India to Senegal, where last year we launched a three-year community-led research project. We’re connecting weekly with 352 people, from four Senegalese communities, to make change happen.

An Action Against Hunger community project in Senegal.

Their knowledge of undernutrition is growing week by week. They’re ready to fight hunger. And so are we.

Building health centres. Rearing herds of cattle. Selling meat at local markets. Pouring milk into their cups. These are sparks of the dynamic changes Senegalese communities are igniting.

Thanks to your support, people in Senegal are fighting against the causes of undernutrition. And discovering new ways to thrive.

Our project in Senegal is awakening hope against hunger. But we can’t stop. There are more communities we want to work with. And we need your help to do it.

Sparking global change

We responded to 18 conflicts last year. And 90% of people in the Gaza Strip are currently going hungry.

At the UK Government’s Global Food Security Summit 2023, our Executive Director, Jean-Michel, spoke on conflict and hunger. We need to uphold the law on using hunger as a weapon of war. A weapon that leaves families and children with no food.

Jean-Michel Grand, Action Against Hunger's Executive Director, speaks at the Global Food Security Summit in 2023.

Action Against Hunger helped 750,000 children recover from malnutrition in 2023. But that number should be zero, and we’re about firing up real change. That’s why we launched guidelines on preventing malnutrition with WHO to treat the root problem.
