In 2019, the humanitarian situation that raised the greatest concern in Latin America was the socio-economic situation affecting Venezuela, where an estimated 7 million people need humanitarian attention.
In 2019 there was a growing flow of people leaving the country with 4.5 million estimated to have left in 2019, reaching 6.5 million in 2020. These people are seeking refuge in neighbouring countries, mainly Colombia and Peru.
We’ve significantly increased our operations in the region. In 2019 we:
- reached 435,371 people
- increased our geographical presence in all countries
- started working in large cities such as Lima and Bogota
- integrated health, protection and prevention of gender-based violence in most of our interventions
