Action Against Hunger is ready to support the people of Afghanistan and is closely monitoring the developing humanitarian situation, after a devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Herat province on Saturday 7th October. The earthquake hit 30 kilometres away from the provincial capital and has flattened several rural villages.
In coordination with local partners in Afghanistan, Action Against Hunger is carrying out assessments to determine our response to the earthquake, which will be initiated in the coming days. Initial reports highlight the need for food, healthcare along with water, sanitation, and hygiene services (known as WASH).
The Taliban government has said that more than 2,400 people have been either killed, while the United Nations has said that the earthquake has destroyed 465 houses and damaged another 135.
