Kate Munro, Head of Advocacy, said:
“The UK’s new Foreign Secretary David Cameron arrives at a critical time, with hunger rising globally, leading to avoidable deaths and development losses. The UK must seize this opportunity to re-establish itself as a leader in ending hunger and malnutrition. At the same time, there is an urgent need to push for an immediate ceasefire in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, prioritising the protection of all civilians.
David Cameron described the first time the UK met its goal of spending 0.7% of its Gross National Income (GNI) on overseas aid under his premiership as one of his “proudest achievements.” We hope the ex-PM’s new role indicates a willingness by the government to protect and increase the overseas aid budget and ensure that it is directed at poverty reduction, not trade interests.”
