Malnutrition is the number one cause of child mortality, claiming the lives of more than 2.3 million children under the age of five each year.
To tackle this growing problem a group of chefs including Rick Stein, Michel Roux Jr, Tom Kerridge, Asma Khan, Angela Hartnett, Tom Hunt, Ken Hom and Vivek Singh, have co-signed a letter to show their support for a new commitment to reducing malnutrition at the upcoming Nutrition for Growth Summit in early December.
Good food does more than put a smile on your face. It nourishes your body with the essential nutrients it needs to perform at its best. Good nutrition provides the energy to perform well in school and at work. It is the fuel that powers prosperity in communities and economies.
The chefs who have signed the letter, support efforts to eliminate malnutrition in the most vulnerable corners of the world. For many in the hardest hit parts of Africa and Asia, nutritious food is simply inaccessible. Coupled with lack of critical healthcare, malnutrition has become the leading cause of child mortality, claiming more than 2.3 million children’s lives each year.
We’re calling on Foreign Secretary Liz Truss to change the trajectory of this growing crisis, and ask that she show leadership at the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth summit on Tuesday 7 December
by pledging to improve the nutrition of at least 50 million people by 2025. To meet this commitment, at least £120 million should be invested in nutrition programmes each year to ensure
children around the world reach their full potential.
