The Global Report on Food Crises 2023 highlights that the number of people experiencing hunger is on the rise. Action Against Hunger has a presence in some of the most crisis-laden countries listed in the report: Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Yemen. In these countries, 40 per cent of the population face critical levels of hunger. Action Against Hunger UK's Head of Advocacy, Kate Munro, responds to the report.

According to the international charity, the deal has allowed passage of vital food products since it was first signed, but it is only one solution to a much broader food crisis.

There has been a 50% increase over the last few years in the number of Syrian people facing food insecurity – overall, 15 million people need humanitarian assistance. This is in the face of conflict, the recent earthquake, a cholera outbreak, and drought. Action Against Hunger has been working in the country since 2008; it was one of the first humanitarian aid agencies to respond to the humanitarian crisis caused by the Syrian conflict. 14 million people have been supported so far through the charity’s programmes.
