Action Against Hunger responds to Pakistan flooding

The hunger charity is prioritising support around food security, healthcare, and improved water systems

  • Following the flooding in Pakistan, Action Against Hunger has coordinated response teams in the areas most affected by the flooding; this includes locations where there is a high number of displaced people as well as limited access to food and water

  • The flooding has been caused by an unprecedented monsoon, after an intense drought. Over 33 million Pakistanis have been affected and one million homes destroyed

  • Pakistan is already affected by an acute economic crisis as well as reeling from the effects of Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine

London, 31 August 2022: Following the catastrophic flooding in multiple districts in Pakistan, Action Against Hunger is coordinating emergency support. This will be in the Sindh and Balochistan provinces, which have been particularly affected by the flash flooding. Alongside Pakistani authorities and local partners, Action Against Hunger is looking to provide support in food security, healthcare, and water supply. The team has already started distribution of hundreds of latrine kits amongst displaced communities in Thatta district of Sindh province and Pishin district of Balochitsan province.

The flooding is being likened to that which occurred in 2010 – a year which saw the deaths of 2,000 people and where one-fifth of the country was submerged by flooding. According to the National Disaster Management Authority, the recent flooding has already led to 1,033 deaths, 421,000 displaced people, and 6.4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance.

Jean-Michel Grand, Executive Director at Action Against Hunger UK, says, “Before the flooding occurred, 27 million people did not have enough access to food in Pakistan due to climate change, the pandemic and the weak economy. The flooding is expected to place further strain on food supplies in the country.

“We urgently need humanitarian funding to address the flooding, especially since more rain is expected.”

Action Against Hunger has been in Pakistan since 1979. The international NGO helped more than 2.2 million people in the country in 2021, focusing on hard-to-reach and under-served areas of Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.
