Action Against Hunger has introduced the ‘Grant for a New Humanitarian Perspective,’ an innovative initiative to start an important conversation on the future of humanitarian imagery and the people it portrays. This grant offers a unique opportunity to explore new approaches to storytelling and visual representation of the communities at the heart of the humanitarian sector.
In addition to showcasing the exceptional work of photographers, videographers, and content creators, this grant aims to elevate the visibility of the individuals who are facing significant challenges caused by conflict, climate and ever-rising food prices where Action Against Hunger operates.
“Portrayals of the people who access humanitarian support are sometimes voyeuristic, even exploitative. By calling for projects that seek to reflect on this and rethink the way individuals facing humanitarian challenges are depicted, we hope to promote fairness, balance and ethics,” said Judith Escribano, Deputy Director of Communications at Action Against Hunger.
Following the official call for applications, Action Against Hunger will then conduct a pre-selection process to identify the most promising projects.
An international and multidisciplinary jury will then assess the shortlisted projects and award the grant to the best applicant. The members of the jury include Cristina de Middel, Azu Nwabogu, Runa Khan and Claudi Carreras Guillén, among others. The selected project will win €10,000 (approximately £8,600) in funding and will be unveiled at an exclusive exhibition starting in October 2024.
Furthermore, the recipient will have the exciting opportunity to receive mentorship from the jury’s president, Cristina de Middel, a renowned documentary photographer and artist.
Applications for the inaugural edition of the grant will be accepted until 31 August, with the selection process scheduled for September and the winner due to be announced on 16 October. This call for applications welcomes all photographers, videographers, and content creators to participate and showcase their talent.
The application form can be accessed here. Further information, dates and guidelines about the scheme can be found on our partner site for Action Against Hunger (France), which can be accessed here.
